A. Gisborne Chorus fibre update: Restored
Yesterday afternoon, the main Chorus fibre breaks in Gisborne were repaired, which allowed VF mobile coverage and fixed broadband services to be restored in the city. Backhaul connectivity was also established last night, which resulted in additional sites being brought back online.
To improve the situation further, a temporary UFB 10G connection has been set up between Gisborne and Tauranga. Although some cell sites to the South of Gisborne still require restoration of Chorus backhaul connectivity, work is ongoing from Gisborne to Napier hoping to bring up some sites today.
In addition, a second dedicated Kordia microwave link has been shipped and is expected to be installed within the next 24 hours, which should further improve the connectivity in South of Gisborne.
B. Napier to Tarawera fibre break update:
Implementation and planning is In-Progress with no ETR at this stage.
Based on a physical inspection, it has been determined that there are between 12 to 14 fibre breaks. The teams are currently working on addressing the logistical and operational challenges of repairing these breaks, starting from Tarawera and moving towards Eskdale. Teams on the ground are mobilising and trying to get to the breaks to restore.
C. Power / Generator deployment update:
Generator deployments and refuelling activities are ongoing.
42 sites are currently running on Generators. Around 19 generators in progress to be deployed at impacted sites. Downers primary focus is to work on refuelling plans this morning.
D. Satellite Capacity Update:
Additional 3 small cells to be deployed in Napier. Reassessment of Gisborne small cell continues today and priorities are being assessed. Small Cells over satellite remain deployed at: Gisborne Airport, Gisborne Police Station, Muriwai Fire Station, Wairoa Council, Wairoa Marae, Hastings Aerodrome, Gisborne Hospital, Wairoa Airport, VF Gisborne Store, Te Puia Hospital, Matawai School & Mahia Police Station.
E. Break down of cell sites running on generator or impacted by fibre cuts:
1. Vodafone Sites (15):
6 waiting gensets (1 Auckland 5 Northland)
4 Chorus (South Gisborne Fibre)
5 Gen refuel – 2 Hawkes Bay & 1 East Cape + 2 Northland
RCG sites – 38 still down:
2. 18 waiting on Gen deployment
8 in Hawkes Bay
1 in Manawatu
2 North of Gisborne
1 in Waikato
4 in Auckland
3. 13 Chorus Fibre
6 sites hang off VF RPG hub site impacted by Chorus.
4. 7 waiting on Spark to confirm
All in Hawkes Bay region – suspected to be down due to fibre

Update -
The main Chorus fibre breaks in Gisborne have been fixed, restoring VF mobile coverage and fixed broadband in the city. Further slips and roadwork damage may occur, so we are keeping backup links implemented as protection. Work continues to restore Chorus backhaul to some cell sites South of Gisborne.
Small Cells over satellite remain deployed at: Gisborne Airport, Gisborne Police Station, Muriwai Fire Station, Wairoa Council, Wairoa Marae, Hastings Aerodrome, Gisborne Hospital, Wairoa Airport, VF Gisborne Store, Te Puia Hospital, Matawai School & Mahia Police Station.

Update -
Chorus Gisborne fibre: Repairs continue today on known breaks North of Gisborne towards Whakatane with an ETR of today. The second dedicated Kordia microwave link into Gisborne is progressing.
We are investigating traffic management to balance congestion on some East Cape links.
Small Cell over satellite, generator, and emergency customer device deliveries are ongoing.

Update -
Gradual improvements are being observed in Northland as power is being restored, with the primary area of focus being Hawkes Bay. Additional generators and equipment are being deployed in Hawkes Bay, including four RCG cell sites on wheels (COWs) provided by VF and Spark. Lists of cell sites addresses have been shared with power companies to prioritize restoration efforts in farm areas. Simultaneously, we are deploying emergency satellite communication equipment, generators, and other devices to the affected areas.
Fibre Restoration Update:
Gisborne Chorus fibre update : Splicing completed with 100m needing an overlay, however another fibre break 1.2km North by road side contractors usings graders causing delays and ETR to restoring partial Chorus connectivity in Gisborne is this afternoon– Restoration ongoing. Another issue North of Gisborne with the 2degrees/Vocus (Te Pui Springs (W1PUI) to Hicks Bay DWDM). This issue has been identified as part of the Chorus Gisborne fibre break, with Vocus link Vodafone sharing. Second capacity link to be stood up in Gisborne using another dedicated Kordia STM 1 M/W link is in progress.
Napier to Tarawera fibre break update: Implementation and planning is in-Progress with no ETR at this stage. Work continuing this morning North of Gisborne with 12km apart breaks. Fibre break has been fixed between Napier & Hastings.
Power / Generator deployment update: Three additional cell sites recovered in Northland, and generators will be moved around to deploy them in other impacted areas. In Napier, three more generators will be deployed, and widespread power restoration is expected, except for the North of Napier. Four to five extra generators will be deployed to bring up more cell sites in the region.A VF Ran engineer is on the ground in Hastings/Napier to help out with restoration activities.
Satellite Capacity Update: Star link deployed in Te Puia hospital. Vodafone stores - mobilising in progress. Connectivity for Civil Defence sites in Napier to be confirmed on Monday. Hasting hospital connectivity to be confirmed.

Update -
A shared Kordia microwave link was brought online last night, putting 3 macro cell sites back on air in Gisborne. This has helped restore some cell connectivity in the region and work continues to deploy additional satellite solutions and a second microwave link into the area.
Feb 17, 17:27 NZDT
Identified -
Gisborne connectivity is priority one. Satellite equipment continues to be deployed to emergency and essential services. Gisborne Airport, Gisborne Police Station & Muriwai are currently running on Small Cell over satellite with the plans to deploy today at Wairoa. Wainui will be commissioned via Optus satellite to provide some macro coverage in the area. 7 additional Optus links are being configured for deployment. We have offered Chorus all possible assistance to repair their fibre damage, but we’re working in parallel to stand up alternate links via Kordia microwave to provide widespread service. Tentative ETR on the first Kordia link is this evening (16/02).

Investigating -
We have 50 generators in affected regions, 35 are deployed, with 15 moving to Hawkes Bay & Gisborne. There have been no reports of infrastructure damage when technicians have attended sites. We continue to work with power companies to provide list of sites down for priority restoration.
In addition, links have been stood up over Spark fibre, restoring connectivity to Hastings & Napier from a network perspective. We are working with Chorus & Vocus to restore fibre North & South of Gisborne and between Napier & Taupo. More updates will be provided once it becomes available. Please refer to our network status page for updates.
